Mauni Amavasya 2024: Know significance & benefits of holy bath in Ganga

Maghi, also known as Mauni Amavasya, is the first amavas in the month of Magh. Just like the name suggests, individuals observe one day of fasting on this day of silence, during which they refrain from speaking. "Mauna" literally means "keeping silent," but in a spiritual sense, it denotes a state of oneness with self. On this day, fasting is considered to help one obtain virtue from the divine. In addition, Ganga baths are considered to hold particular importance on this day. Taking holy dips in the Ganga during the month of Magh and on Mauni Amavasya is considered highly auspicious since it is believed that the river is inhabited by deities on this day.

Date & Time of Mauni Amavasya 2024

Amavasya Tithi starts at February 9, 2024 from 08:02 AM.
Amavasya Tithi ends at February 10, 2024 at 04:28 AM.

Why Do We Celebrate Mauni Amavasya?

According to mythology, a pot containing Amrit emerged from the churning of an ocean during Samdra Manthan between Devs and Asurs.  Due to a few drips of the Amrit falling into the river, it gained great value. Because of this, people observe Maun Vrat, take a holy dip in the Ganges, and consider Mauni Amavasya as sacred.  Mauni Amavasya 2024: Know significance & benefits of holy bath in Ganga.

The significance of Mauni Amavasya

To help people understand the impact of their words and how they affect other people, Maun Vrat is an efficient way. Although there are many ways to harm an enemy, your friend might suffer more from the words you choose to use or from your silence. Words have the complete capacity to build or destroy a relationship. Both demotivation and motivation can come from your words. You can dedicate at least one day of your life to yourself on Mauni Amavasya.

What should we do on Mauni Amavasya?

  1. Wake up early and take a bath in the Ganga to start your day. Ganga water can be added to the water used for bathing at home. In addition to purifying the body, this will calm your mind.

  2. It is advised to do 108 parikramas, or circumambulations, of the sacred Tulsi (basil) plant after taking a bath. On this day, worshipping Lord Vishnu is considered to be very fortunate for mental as well as physical wellness.

  3. Giving food, clothing, etc. to the needy people is believed to bestow upon you high virtues after you have worshipped the deities.

  4. On this day, one has to remain silent, or "Maun." Maintaining 'maun' on this day can help you in achieving command over your senses in a peaceful atmosphere.
